Before we start, we have to explain that adding the Facebook icon means creating a shortcut on your Desktop. In fact, there are two parts: adding the shortcut and adding the Facebook logo. The process is similar for all Windows desktop devices. However, if you have one of the older models, it may not be compatible with your device.

Now, more than ever, staying in touch with friends and family (and work colleagues) is important as the reality of self-isolation takes hold. With that in mind, Facebook decided to expand the ways in which you can access Messenger by bringing it to the Windows 10 and macOS desktops.

Stan Chudnovsky, VP of Messenger, has announced(Opens in a new window) that Facebook Messenger is now available as brand new standalone desktop apps for Windows 10 and macOS users. It means Messenger can be used without having to rely on a web browser, mobile devices, or the old app designed for Windows 8. Facebook designed this new version for big screens, so you can relax in front of a laptop or focus on your friends and family using a much larger monitor.

The new desktop app offers the same features as the web and mobile versions including dark mode and access to GIFs, but adds a notifications feature which makes finding new messages much quicker if you're having multiple chats. All three versions of Messenger interact seamlessly, so you can switch between a PC, laptop, phone, or tablet without missing a message or call.

Facebook is keen to point out the desktop app offers free and unlimited group video calls while not requiring you know someone's phone number or email address to contact them. If you are friends with them on Facebook, Messenger chats and video calls will just work.

The desktop Messenger app is available via the Microsoft Store(Opens in a new window) and the Mac App Store(Opens in a new window) rather than being offered as a direct download. Hopefully that changes in future as not everyone will want to go through those stores to access the software.

It's a breeze to stay up to date with family and friends wherever they are on almost any device. Now Windows 10 has joined the party with an app that's free to download from the Microsoft Store and run on your desktop.

Although we usually connect to the social network developed at Menlo Park from an Android or iOS application, mainly due to the possibility to be online 24 hours a day and the immediacy to upload photos and live videos and tag friends as things happen, loads of people still login from their Windows PC. And despite the fact that many of them still do so from the web version accessible from a browser, you should know that there's an official desktop client from Microsoft's operating system that turns out to be more comfortable and easier to use.

The desktop client of this social network is offered straight from the Windows Store for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 (unfortunately, it's not available for Windows 7). To download it, simply press our Download button, wait for it to download to your PC, and run the APPX file. It might take some time, depending on the speed of your connection as it weighs just over 160 MB, but you'll soon be able to install the app and start exploring your timeline from your computer.

As we've already said, you won't miss any of the aspects of the web or mobile versions with this desktop application, as it comes along with all the functions that have turned it into the best social network in the world.

Facebook is looking to help Messenger desktop users celebrate the holiday season with a new set of AR effects, filters, and 360-degree backgrounds, the first effects of their type to be added to the desktop version of the app.

Users have been able to add AR effects within their regular, in-app Messenger interactions for some time, with Facebook adding 360-degree backgrounds in the app back in April. Now, they'll be available in the desktop version as well, with a range of seasonal options - as explained by Facebook:

Facebook announced the full roll-out of the desktop version of Messenger back in April, after testing it out in selected markets earlier in the year. At that time, Facebook noted that it had seen a more than a 100% increase in people using their desktop browser for audio and video calling on Messenger, as they sought to stay connected during the pandemic. Given this, Facebook sought to provide more dedicated tools to cater to the increased demand - and with COVID-19 set to keep families apart during the holidays, that will no doubt see Messenger desktop usage increase again over the next few weeks.

"To access any of the holiday filters and effects simply open the Messenger app on your desktop and start a video call, create a room, or open the Messenger camera. Click on the smiley face icon to see the filters and backgrounds tabs."

Pretty much anything your mobile app does. You can switch notifications on or off to receive alerts on your desktop when you get new messages. You can also adjust the theme of the app to enable dark mode, and change the default skin tone of your emoji.

Any chats, including their settings and any files, GIFs and images are downloaded and sync automatically. So, if you have a particular group chat muted because it's just too busy and distracting, that group chat will be muted in the desktop app without you needing to mute it again.

MY GOALTo post to a facebook profile or wall from a desktop application. The desktop application will be used by individual users who have their own facebook account. The aim is to create each user their own facebook app and get the app id and app secret. And then use the app id and app secret in the desktop application ( Saved somewhere in database or config )to allow the user of the desktop application to post to their profile without having to enter their email address and password to login first

I have created my facebook app and have set it to live status.. i have also added in all possible permissions and extended permissions in the settings ( Within facebook ) just to make sure i wasnt missing anything. So I do have my AppID and App secret.. I also have my Client Token which it says to use in place of the app secret for 'auth methods'. I use this to get my access token. I tried the app secret and it doesnt return the access token

I am able to achieve the above using twitter where i can use the secret, token, id etc ... they provide and I can successfully post to my twitter account from a desktop application WITHOUT logging into my twitter account.

He also seems to have had success which i have not using the same code - this code was uses in June 2012 so there could have been breaking changes released sincethen.I got the message : (OAuthException - #2500) An active access token must be used to query information about the current user... when i used the sdk. When i tried to get the access token using a web request and then pass that token to the sdk object to create a facebookclient i got this message(OAuthException - #190) Invalid OAuth access token signature. 2ff7e9595c
